Athletes with Disabilities
The resources below will answer many of the questions you may have about registering for the Cornfield Cornfield 10K and participating on race day.
Push Rim Wheelchair Division
Two classes within this division are contested at the Cornfield Cornfield:
- T51/T52 (Quad) – Partial arm muscle power; no to partial trunk control.
- T53/T54 (Open) – Normal arm muscle power; partial to normal trunk control.
- Refer to the World Para Athletics Classification Rules and Regulations for a more detailed description of each sport class.
- No chairs with motors, gears, pedals, or cranks are permitted.
Push Rim Wheelchair Scoring
- All results of official Push Rim Wheelchair finishers will appear in a “Push Rim Wheelchair” results category, in order by finishing time.
- The Push Rim Wheelchair division is considered a division event; awards will be given to the top finisher by gender for each Push Rim Wheelchair Division Class.
Duo Team Division
A Duo Team is comprised of one officially registered runner (Pusher) pushing one officially registered person with a permanent physical disability (Rider) in a customized racing wheelchair, specific for outdoor road racing. Teams wishing to participate on Duo Team must both be officially registered, sign a participant waiver, and meet the following eligibility requirements:
- The Rider must have a permanent disability, wear a helmet and be secured in a customized racing wheelchair throughout the entire race.
- One Pusher must push the Rider the entire race distance within the official race time limit; relay teams or the substitution of another runner for the Pusher will not be permitted.
- The Pusher must maintain contact and control with the customized racing wheelchair at all times throughout the race; this person pushing the customized racing wheelchair must have a tether on the chair.
- Only the registered Rider is allowed to ride in the customized racing wheelchair.
- Duo Teams must move to the side of the road if an official race vehicle needs to pass them.
- No chairs with motors, gears, pedals, or cranks are permitted.
- Athletes must compete in racing wheelchairs. For safety reasons, no day chairs or strollers are permitted for Duo Teams.
- Duo Teams should line up in the start line chute according to their estimated pace, or at the end of the start chute, whichever is more comfortable. There is not a specific Duo Team start wave.
Duo Team Scoring
- Each Duo Team will be equipped with two (2) timing devices: one (1) on the bib of the Pusher of the customized racing chair; and one (1) on the customized racing wheelchair itself.
- The fastest net time recorded by the devices will be used as the official finishing time.
- All results of official Duo Team finishers will appear in a “Duo Team Exhibition” results category, in order by finishing time.
- The Duo Team division is considered an exhibition event; no awards will be given and Duo Team finishers will not be ranked by age group or gender
Visually Impaired Athlete Team Division
A Visually Impaired Athlete Team is comprised of an officially registered runner (Sighted Guide) and an officially registered person with a visual impairment. The visually impaired athlete and sighted guide must both be officially registered, sign a participant waiver, and meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Athletes who wish to compete in the Visually Impaired Athlete Team division must have reduced or no vision caused by damage to the eye structure, optical nerves or optical pathways, or visual cortex of the brain. Athletes that have visual impairments that are correctable with glasses or contacts are not eligible to compete in the Visually Impaired Athlete division.
- Athletes eligible to compete in the Visually Impaired Athlete division will be allowed to run with a maximum of one sighted guide to complete the course. The sighted guide must be able to complete the half marathon distance within the official race time limit. No relay teams of sighted guides will be accepted.
Visually Impaired Athlete Team Scoring
- The visually impaired athlete and the sighted guide will each be equipped with a timing device. The timing device for the visually impaired athlete will be used as the official finishing time.
- All results of official visually impaired finishers will appear in a “Visually Impaired Athlete” results category, in order by finishing time
- The Visually Impaired Athlete division is considered an exhibition event; no awards will be given and Visually Impaired finishers will not be ranked by age group or gender.
